Service is a cornerstone in the Mormon Church. Mormons believe in being humble and charitable. We believe that serving others can strengthen our relationship with Heavenly Father. The best example of a service-oriented person is Jesus Christ, our redeemer and savior. Even though he was the messiah, he was humble and was constantly trying to serve others. When His followers insisted on calling Him master, He told them He would rather be their servant. Through his words and actions, he was constantly trying to enrich the lives of those around him. His ultimate act of service was the sacrifice of his life on the cross. Through His atonement, men have the chance to repent and be forgiven of their sins.
Service is an integral part of the organization of the Mormon Church. All positions are non-paid. Men and women who hold high positions of leadership within the church receive no monetary compensation for their hard work. All positions are volunteer-based. One of the greatest examples of the Mormon Church’s commitment to service is the church missionary program. Each year, the church sends thousands of Mormon missionaries worldwide to share the message and gospel of Jesus Christ. Missionaries volunteer for two years and many of them pay their own way.
Within local Mormon congregations, service is highly promoted and encouraged. Members are continually organizing service projects. The church has set up various programs within the church to encourage service. Home teachers are assigned to a family that they visit each month where they provide their service and help. Women in the church belong to a “Relief Society” which provides support to women in the church. Within most church congregations there is a service committee, which plans various church and community service projects.
Mormons worldwide perform acts of service within the temple. Mormons are also actively involved in family history and genealogy. The Mormon Church gives millions of dollars annually to aid in humanitarian efforts worldwide. We distribute food, provide assistance in times of disaster, fund projects that help struggling communities, and help members find employment.
We are promised great blessings if we serve others diligently. Many times we find that the one providing the service gets more satisfaction than the one receiving the service. Also, by engaging in service we are following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ, who we are continually striving to be like.
