Jason Bagley is a creative director for Old Spice. He is responsible for the Old Spice commercials starring Isaiah Mustafa (who rose in popularity to become one of America’s “sexiest men”), which have won multiple awards. The first Mustafa spot won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Advertising Festival. Now Bagley’s idea has led to an Emmy nomination. Bagley is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, sometimes inadvertently called the Mormon Church.
Bagley considers himself slow to make vocational decisions. He graduated from Brigham Young University at age 27, and that’s without a graduate degree. By the time he had chosen a major, he had taken a myriad of electives. No vocation sounded palatable to him, although he had been making fun commercials since he was a kid. Bagley was barely able to graduate from high school. Then he was called on an LDS mission to Japan. Serving a mission is difficult enough, but learning Japanese is even more so. Bagley says he learned to discipline himself on his mission, increasing his self-awareness and self-confidence. [1] While on his mission, the rule came down that all the bicycle-riding missionaries had to wear helmets. Bagley made a funny video to relay that message.
After his mission, Bagley started at Utah Valley University, pulling A’s, and then transferred to BYU. While at his first job in Salt Lake City, he spent 18 months putting together a collection that displayed his talents. It was impressive enough to land him a position at ad agency Wieden+Kennedy in Portland, Oregon. He first worked on the Nike account, through which he met many athletes and celebrities. He was then promoted to creative director for Old Spice and Electronic Arts. “The Human Chain” ad for Nike has an Emmy nomination.
After 6 years with Wieden + Kennedy, Bagley’s main responsibility is creative leadership. Bagley has been a guest on Portland TV shows and on CNN. Bagley had two commercials in the 2009 Super Bowl for CareerBuilder.com. For the 2010 Super Bowl he also had two commercials, one for CareerBuilder.com and one for Electronic Arts, a video game.
Bagley lives in Portland with his wife, Jill, and three children — Ruby, 8; Ezra, 4; and Lucile, 2 (as of summer 2010).
